The Urban 20 (U20) virtual Summit convened on September 30 – October 2, 2020, concluding the U20 activities for this year. The Summit was chaired by Mr. Fahad Alrasheed, the U20 Chair and the CEO of the Royal Authority of Riyadh City, and attended by representatives from the Saudi G20 Presidency: Mr. Majid Al-Hogail, the Saudi Minister of Municipal and Rural affairs who participated on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Dr. Fahad Almubarak, the G20 Saudi Sherpa, and the Assistant Minister of Finance Mr. Abdulaziz Alrasheed, who participated on behalf of Mr. Mohammed Al-Jadaan, the Saudi Finance Minister.

The U20 Summit gathered the mayors of cities from G20 countries, observer cities from non-G20 members, and representatives from a number of international organizations. Discussions focused on several urban topics proposing innovative and environmentally friendly urban solutions to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and maintain healthy societies.

At the conclusion of the Summit, Mr. Al-Hogail, on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, received the U20 recommendations, highlighting in his speech the important work of Engagement Groups, including U20, in supporting inclusive and prosperous societies: "It is more important than ever to have cities’ representatives participate in international multilateral platforms; given that such platforms discuss a wide range of citizens’ needs on a daily basis, and have extensive knowledge of key challenges and opportunities related to multiple pressing global issues including infrastructure, smart cities, civil societies, energy, innovation, and many other areas related to urban society.”

As the voice and representatives of civil societies and the private sector, Engagement Groups are at the heart of the G20 efforts in building a more resilient world for all by contributing to the policy-making process with their unique perspectives.
