The attention of many European countries are directed to the heart of the Algerian desert, where there are one of the largest reserves of crude gas in the world, estimated at about 2,400 billion cubic meters.

Algeria produces about 100 billion cubic meters of gas annually, of which it exports half to Italy and Spain through pipelines built decades ago. It also exports liquefied gas via ships to Turkey and also to France, from which it imported 3.6 billion cubic meters in 2019.

In light of the war on Ukraine and the high tension with Russia and the sanctions imposed on it, European heads of state recently flocked to Algeria to obtain more gas, as did Italy.

Algeria is able to double production, but it needs to develop infrastructure at a very high cost. Here, France can contribute through investment, an uneasy task, led by President Emmanuel Macron, who arrived Thursday in Algeria to revive relations and turn the page of the estrangement.
