The last eight grain silos collapsed in the northern part of Ihrat on, Tuesday, which was damaged by the devastating explosion that took place in the port of Beirut in August 2020, according to what AFP correspondents witnessed.

The collapse of the silos came weeks after a fire broke out, which, according to officials and experts, was caused by the fermentation of the grain stocks that remained in the place after the explosion, due to the humidity and high temperature.

Parts of the northern Baras have fallen in batches since July 31, one of which was on August 4, the anniversary of the explosion, but today's fall is the largest.

The fires were burning for hours in new parts of the last eight remaining wheat silos on the northern side, causing thick smoke for days before they completely collapsed.

Last April, the Lebanese government took a decision to demolish the dumps, fearing for public safety, but suspended its implementation after objections from civil groups and the committee of families of the victims of the port explosion, which demanded that the dumps be transferred to a landmark witnessing the explosion.  The authorities did not empty the silos of grain.

On, Tuesday, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati sent a letter to Minister of Works Ali Hamiya asking him to "report the necessary measures to preserve the southern silos as a historical monument in memory of the martyrs of the port."

"The remaining southern mass is stable so far," said the engineer who installed sensors inside the silos, Emmanuel Durand.

On August 4, 2020, the port of Beirut witnessed a huge explosion that killed more than two hundred people and injured more than 6,500 others, causing extensive damage to the facility and a number of neighborhoods in the Lebanese capital.
