Grain silo project enhances Aqaba Port competitiveness: Official
Al-Anbat - The grain silos project in the new Aqaba port, southern Jordan, contributed to reducing ships docking time from 12 days to three days, an official announced Wednesday.
Executive Director of Ports Development and Establishment at the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), Mohammad Dardasawi told Petra that the project the project will reduce waiting costs, improve work pace and raise the port's competitiveness to be a center for re-exporting grain from the Kingdom to neighboring countries.
The project is currently undergoing a new expansion to reach a capacity of 200,000 tons within several stages, at a total cost of up to JD58 million for the first stage, including infrastructure and vacuum devices with a capacity of up to 1600 tons per hour, Dardasawi added.
He added that the ADC has launched the project's second phase with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons, in addition to a conveyor line for the grain, vacuum and loader that gives the ability to re-load if needed to raise the handling capacity to six million tons annually.
He pointed out that this achievement meets the Kingdom's grain needs by the triple, as it gives the opportunity for Aqaba to be a center for re-exporting grains to neighboring countries.
Technical Affairs and Follow-up Director at the Jordan's Silos and Supply General Company (JSSGC) Osama Asakriah quantities that have been offloaded since the beginning of the project amounted to 2.6 million tons of grains, with a total of 52 ships.
The new expansion of the project will cost JD30.7 million, and include the establishment of a new device for offloading and loading in order to increase the handling capacity at the port and improve work with minimal time and cost
