Al-Anbat - During the first and second days of the new year, the city of Aqaba has witnessed a "noticeable" turnout by local and foreign visitors with occupancy rates for apartments and hotels hitting about 90%, according to preliminary data issued by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA).

In a press statement issued on Thursday, The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Nayef Bakhit, said Aqaba has become an international tourist attraction, thanks to its modern transport network.

This tourist flow, he affirmed, has "positively" affected Petra and Wadi Rum, in light of the tourism programs agreed with several European offices and countries.

With thousands of European tourists flocking Aqaba by sea and air, he said this visitor turnout demonstrates the success of the tourism promotion campaigns carried out by the ASEZA externally, and the confidence in the Jordanian tourism product, which contributed to reviving the wheel of Kingdom's economic and tourism activities, especially in the city of Aqaba.

The ASEZA, he noted, provides an attractive investment, tourism and trade environment through the laws and legislations in force, which constitute a guarantee for investors, tourists and visitors alike.

Bakhit stressed the ASEZA's permanent cooperation with all relevant authorities to reach new unconventional tourism markets to boost Aqaba's tourism product, which enhances the competitiveness of this industry, currently battling a decline due to regional tension.
