House Speaker meets Maltese foreign minister

Al-Anbat - peaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, on Sunday discussed with Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Development Carmelo Abela, ways to develop joint cooperation mechanisms and increase trade volume between the two countries.

During the meeting, Tarawneh stressed the importance of maintaining Jordanian-Maltese parliamentary coordination and cooperation with friends in the EU, in order to achieve common goals in various fields, especially in the trade and economic areas.

Tarawneh presented the burdens Jordan is facing as a result of hosting successive humanitarian refugee waves, adding the international community is still failing the refugee-hosting countries in this regard.

On Palestine, he said Jordan will remain "firm and fixed" in its stance towards the Palestinian cause and in defense of Jerusalem, adding it will also be "a solid defender" in this regard under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II to reach a solution on a just basis that constitutes a gateway to solving all the region's crises.

Discussing Jordan's war on terrorism, he said the Kingdom had confronted this phenomenon early and extended "great" services to the international community in this regard, based on its belief in the principles of international law and the realization of international peace and security, and on the importance of maintaining international coordination and cooperation to counter extremist ideology in a holistic manner.

For his part, Malta's top diplomat valued Jordan's efforts, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in the region, which are always aimed at establishing security and stability and giving priority to the language of dialogue.

He said: We highly understand the burdens facing Jordan, especially in regard to the Syrian refugee file, calling on the international community to support the Kingdom and the refugee-hosting countries to continue their humanitarian role.

At the end of the meeting, Abela affirmed his country's keenness to enhance cooperation with Jordan in various economic fields and joint work to increase the volume of mutual trade.
