Al-Anbat -

An Indian student has been arrested for killing an aspiring model before stuffing her body in a suitcase and dumping it by the side of a road.

The suspect - who has been named in reports as both Syed Hasan and Muzammil Syed - was taken into custody after Mansii Dixit's body was found in Malad, a western suburb of Mumbai, on Monday.

Police said the 20-year-old model had recently moved to the city with dreams of becoming a model and met Syed online.

The pair were reportedly in Syed's flat when they got into an argument and he struck her with a sharp object.

Deputy Police Commissioner Sangramsingh Nishandar said Syed is then believed to have stuffed the victim's body into a suitcase and left on the side of a quiet road in Malad.

He added that investigators are working to discover what sparked the argument between the pair.

According to the Times of India, the suspect told police his meeting with Ms Dixit had been their first.

He also claimed he had only arrived in Mumbai from Hyderabad a week earlier.

Police are investigating whether he met Ms Dixit on a dating app, according to the newspaper.

Police arrested Syed, from Hyderabad, within hours of Ms Dixit's body being found in a suitcase.

They were tipped off by a cab driver, who told police he became suspicious after helping the suspect lift his luggage into the vehicle, the Times reports.

The driver said he felt the load in the suitcase was uneven when he put it into his vehicle's boot.

He also told authorities that the suspect changed his destination twice on rideshare app Ola - before deciding to get out in Malad.

After he got out, the driver said he watched him dump the bag and promptly called police.

Officers tracked down the suspect after reviewing CCTV footage.
